DNC Chairman Announces His Nominees for At-Large Members from Colorado
The Chairman of the Democratic National Committee has the opportunity to appoint At-Large members to the DNC and make committee appointments. Virginia Governor Tim Kaine was elected in January. He has announced his nominees for these positions, and Blanca O'Leary, former vice chair of Pitkin County Democrats, and Sharon Gomez-Bonner, a precinct leader for Pueblo County Democrats are the two nominees from Colorado.
Blanca and Sharon will replace Maria Handley and Ramona Martinez, who were on the DNC during Governor Howard Dean's term. We congratulate and welcome Blanca and Sharon. And we thank Maria and Ramona for their service over the past four years.
The two new members will join Pat Waak, Dan Slater, Debbie Marquez, Mannie Rodriguez and Anthony Graves in the Colorado delegation. We all look forward to continuing to represent Colorado well.
Governor Kaine also appoints DNC Executive Committee members and members to four committees: Finance, Credentials, Resolutions, and Rules & Bylaws. Pat Waak serves on the Executive Committee as a representative of the Western Region of the Association of State Democratic Chairs.
Governor Kaine has appointed three Coloradans to the Resolutions Committee: Anthony Graves, Blanca O'Leary and Pat Waak. We will be voting to confirm his appointments on Friday at the DNC's Fall Meeting in Austin, Texas.

Buescher prepares students for voter registration
Today, Secretary of State Bernie Buescher spoke directly to high school students along the Front Range about voter registration and how to avoid potential pitfalls. He began his tour, called the Civic Stampede, Tuesday morning at an assembly of students at Castle View High School in Castle Rock and concluded at George Washington High School in Denver. In all, Buescher visited five local highs schools.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, fewer than 51% of people between the ages of 18 and 24 voted in last year's election in Colorado, which is well below Colorado's turnout of 68.4% of all citizens over 18.
During Buescher's presentation to the students, he focused on voter registration timing and determining residency at college. For instance, students are allowed to register to vote before their 18th birthday, if it falls before Election Day. Because state law closes registration 29 days before an election, some 17-year olds with October birthdays would be ineligible to vote in November if they waited to register after their birthday. Also, as students move to college, Buescher encouraged them to be thoughtful about what they considered their primary residences for voter registration.

Gov. Ritter Declares September "Workforce Development Month"
Getting Colorado's economy back on solid footing is the theme of a statewide campaign that kicks off this month with Gov. Ritter's proclamation declaring September as Workforce Development Month. Over the next four weeks, Workforce Centers, led by the Colorado Workforce Development Council, are teaming with the Department of Labor and Employment to provide a variety of special events for job seekers and businesses across the state.
During September, Colorado's 50-plus Workforce Centers will provide information and services to both job seekers and employers. Activities will range from presentations to employers to workshops for job seekers and events designed to introduce the public to the services offered at local offices. The goal is to help job seekers explore careers and strengthen the services offered to local businesses and start-up companies.
Many of the events will have an overarching New Energy Economy theme. The American Solar Energy Society (http://www.ases.org/) predicts that millions more Americans will be working in renewable energy or energy efficiency industries in the next 20 years. Those jobs will not just be technical, but will include new positions in manufacturing, construction, accounting, and management.
