Mercury Storage Discussion - 3
Response
Martelle--I strongly second what Jim has written. Oak Ridge, Tennessee doesn't want this stuff any longer, so Senator Lamar Alexander slipped a provision in a bill to prevent export and sale of recovered mercury to haul 10,000 pounds of mercury from his state to anywhere else stupid enough to take it. GJ has been nominated, but we need to unite to decline the invitation. Rather than playing nice with the local DOE, we need to be educating the community about the toxicity of mercury and the problems in handling it. A good place to begin is the Grand Junction Daily Blog (http:// www.junctiondailyblog.com/index.php?article=1333). Ralph has laid out some very good reasons for leaving the stuff where it is. The second best option is to send it somewhere else.
Even Kathy Hall is against this new "development."
