Prison Spending, Sentencing and the Colorado Budget

Oct 15, 2009 05:05 PM |

Mike Krause from the Independence Institute: Important general fund spending issue.

The Independence Institute, Club 20, and the Pew Center on the States invite you to join us for a panel event to discuss:

Prison Spending, Sentencing and the Colorado Budget:

How many more prison beds can we afford?

Twenty years ago, prison spending was less than 3 percent of the state budget. Last year, prison spending was nearly 9 percent of general fund spending in Colorado, and still growing. Please join us for a panel discussion on the impact of sentencing on Colorado's prison population and on the Colorado budget, and the ongoing work of the Colorado Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice (CCJJ) around sentencing reform in Colorado.

Panelists include:

  • State Senator Morgan Carroll
  • Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger
  • Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey
  • Chairman of the 9th JD Community Corrections Board Steve Reynolds
  • Colorado Department of Public Safety Director Pete Weir
  • Colorado Department of Corrections Director Ari Zavaras
